DES MOINES, Iowa – Nazareth Mitrou-Long scored a career-high 37 points to help Iowa State (7-3) defeat Drake (1-9), 97-80 on Saturday night in Wells Fargo Arena.
The senior from Mississauga, Ontario, put on a shooting clinic for the Cyclones all night, knocking down 14-of-18 shots from the field, including 8-of-12 from 3-point territory.
How it Happened
Mitrou-Long was unstoppable from the opening tip, pouring in 22 points on 8-of-11 shooting, including 5-of-8 from beyond the 3-point line in the first half. It was a game of runs in the first 20 minutes, but an early 12-0 Cyclone spurt was crucial for the ISU offense to find some rhythm after going scoreless over the game's first 3:16, with Drake building an early 7-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs responded in kind with a 15-2 run of their own, however Mitrou-Long scored on three-consecutive possessions for the Cyclones, hitting a pair of triples before a converting an and-one opportunity to cut the Drake lead to 27-23 with just over five minutes to play in the stanza. Iowa State surged to a 42-40 lead at the half, despite shooting 39 percent (15-38). Darrell Bowie, who made his first start as a Cyclone on the night, chipped in seven points and four boards in the half.
The Bulldogs put together an 8-0 spurt early in the second half to take a 50-48 lead with 18:05 to play that was indicative of the back-and-forth nature of the second half. With Drake clinging to a 56-55 advantage, Iowa State scored 7-straight points on run-outs, including five from Nick Weiler-Babb.
Bowie came up big in what ended up being the deciding stretch of the game. With score tied at 76-76 with 6:05 to play, the senior first kept the ball alive for Iowa State on a missed free throw resulting in an offensive rebound. He then scored back-to-back buckets inside, securing a lead the Cyclones would extend late, finishing the game on a 21-4 run.

Nazareth Mitrou-Long scored a career-high 37 points on 14-of-18 shooting, including 8-of-12 from beyond the 3-point line. The senior was unstoppable throughout, with his 37 points going down as the most ever scored in a collegiate game in Wells Fargo Arena.
Monte' Morris was steady throughout, putting up 20 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field, to go with seven rebounds and four assists without a turnover.
In his first start as a Cyclone, Darrell Bowie chipped in 12 points and eight boards, including six offensive rebounds.
