Cyclones Topple In-State Rival Northern Iowa 4-0

AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team (8-1, 0-0 Big 12) moved its winning streak to seven matches when it defeated in-state rival Northern Iowa (1-5, 0-0 MWC), 4-0, at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center on Friday.

The Cyclones have focused all season long on getting an early lead by taking the doubles point. Facing one of their in-state rivals on Friday called for the same plan.

The team started off strong when the top pairing of Samantha Budai and Liza Buss cruised to a 6-3 victory. The top duo defeated the top pairing from the Panthers of Jieke Stroobant and Elvira Lopez. Alejandra Galvis and Annabella Bonadonna came into the match winning their last six doubles matches together. Their match up against the Panthers moved their winning streak to seven. The duo defeated Astrid Santos and Gisela Kemper 6-4.

Even though Iowa State's doubles play has been strong of late, the singles play has been just as strong during the Cyclones' winning streak.

Freshman Claudia Toledo entered the lineup today in the fifth position and did not disappoint in her first singles match of the spring season. Toledo defeated Sydney Wolfe 6-2, 6-1. Alejandra Galvis improved her singles record to 14-3 today when her opponent, Gisela Kemper, was retired due to injury. Galvis was leading Kemper 3-0 before Kemper was injured, as well. Then Samantha Budai clinched the victory by defeating the top player from UNI, Jieke Stroobant, 6-3, 6-1.

The Cyclones will have a little break before there next game action. The team will travel to Buffalo on March 5 to face the Buffalo Bulls at 11 a.m.
