Cyclones Defeat the Memphis, 4-1

MEMPHIS, Tenn - The Iowa State tennis team (11-2, 0-0 Big 12) made a quick hour drive to Memphis after facing the Arkansas State Red Wolves on Thursday in Jonesboro, Ark. The Cyclones were hoping to carry over the momentum from their 7-0 victory over the Red Wolves.

The Cyclones were able to use that momenum from the start of the match. The team came out fast with the mindsight to get another winning streak alive. Regina Espindola and Anna Kuuttila started the day off strong in doubles play. The third pairing defeated Marta Morga and Tara McEleroy 6-2. The Cyclones top pairing didn't waste any time, as well. Samantha Budai and Liza Buss defeated their opponent momments after Espindola and Kuuttila did. Budai and Buss defeated Hanna Sohn and Janina Berres 6-3. Both of the Cyclone pairings victories clinched the doubles point for the Cyclones. The Cyclones focus all year long has been staying focused during doubles, try to clinch every doubles point and use the momentum to carry them through singles play as well. That formula has been working during the spring season and it worked again in Memphis against the Tigers.

Senior Alejandra Galvis came out of the gate strong in singles play. Galvis defeated Marta Morga 6-1, 6-1 to grab the second point for the Cyclones. Galvis' singles play has been strong all year long. Galvis owns a singles record this year is 20-4. Samantha Budai was the next Cyclone to gain a point. Budai defeated Hanna Sohn 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. With the Cyclones up 3-0, Annabella Bonadonna was the next Cyclone to gain a point for Iowa State. Bonadonna defeated Tara McElroy 6-4, 6-3 to clinch the victory of the Cyclones with the 4-1 win.

The Cyclones will be back in action next weekend when they face off against Oral Roberts on Thursday, March 17th in Tulsa, Okla. Oral Roberts will be the final non-conference opponnent for the Cyclones before they take on the Oklahoma Sooners the following day.
