NORMAN, Okla.- The Iowa State tennis team (12-3, 0-1 Big 12) started conference play against the Oklahoma Sooners (5-7, 1-0 Big 12) at the Headington Family Tennis Center. The Cyclones dropped their first Big 12 action of the season to the Sooners, 4-0.
The Cyclones have relied all year long on their doubles play to get an early lead. The team's doubles play has been strong all year, but came up short against the Sooners on Friday. The top pairing of Samantha Budai and Liza Buss dropped their match to Lily Miyazaki and Emma Devine, 2-6. The Sooners went into singles play with a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately, the Cyclones were unable to get over the early deficit in singles play, as well. The team lost all three singles matches to the Sooners. Freshman Annabella Bonadonna, who has been an every day member of the lineup in her first year, lost to Christiana Brigante 2-6, 2-6. Another freshman, Claudia Toldeo got the call into the lineup today. Toledo battled hard in the first set, but came up short in the match losing to Malene Stripp 3-6, 1-6.
Iowa State will be back in action Sunday for their second Big 12 competition of the season. The Cyclones will be facing off against Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla. at 12:00 p.m. Check back to cyclones.com and follow our twitter (@CycloneTEN) for all of your most up to date information.
