AUSTIN, Texas – The Iowa State women's tennis team took the doubles point from No. 25 Texas but was unable to defeat the Longhorns Sunday afternoon at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center, falling 4-2 in Big 12 action. The Cyclones fall to 13-7 overall and 2-5 in Big 12 play, while Texas improves to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in league action.
The Cyclones won the doubles point with impressive play at the top-two spots. Sami Budai and Liza Buss teamed up to defeat Breaunna Addison and Katie Poluta, 6-3. The point was clinched shortly after with Alejandra Galvis and Anabella Bonadonna beating Dani Wagland and Daniella Roldan, 6-3. Regina Espindola and Ana Gasparovic were leading their opponent, 5-4, when the match was suspended after ISU clinched the point.
Texas evened the match quickly as Chelsea Crovetti beat Liera Bender, 6-2, 6-2, and then took the lead as Poluta beat Galvis at No. 3 singles by a 6-1, 6-1 score. Espindola got a big win at No. 4 singles, downing Roldan, 6-0, 7-6 (5), to tie the match 2-2.
It was all Texas after that with the Longhorns getting wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles to clinch the match.
The Cyclones will be back in action next weekend when it hosts Texas Tech on Friday and TCU on Sunday in the final home match of the season.
