EUGENE, Oregon – Jhoanmy Luque had a big day for Iowa State in the women's triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships finishing fourth with a career-best jump of 43-10 1/2. Across Luque's six jumps at Hayward Field on Saturday, all five of her legal jumps were better than her personal best which she had set just two weeks ago.
Luque's fourth-place finish scored Iowa State five team points. Combined with Christina Hillman's three points in the shot put on Thursday, ISU finished tied for 29th as a team with eight points.
Luque is now a three-time All-American, but this marks her first career First Team All-America nod. It is her second All-America honor of the weekend, as the sophomore took 11th in the long jump on Thursday to get Second Team All-America. Luque is also the first women's triple jump All-American, indoors or outdoors, in Iowa State history.
After fouling on her first throw, Luque made a huge statement with her second leap of 43-10 1/2, which moved her into second place at the time. That jump was six-and-three-quarter inches better than her previous bests of 43-3 3/4 set just two weeks ago at the NCAA West Preliminaries. She showed that it was not a fluke on her third try, as she got herself a wind-aided 43-6 and was in fourth halfway through the competition.
The Venezuelan's fourth jump was a windy 43-4 1/2, and followed that with a wind-aided 43-5 on her fifth attempt. She was able to fire off another strong effort on her final jump, as she posted a wind-aided 43-10. While she was unable to surpass her second effort, none of the competitors behind her were able to either, and she was able to finish fourth.
