AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State volleyball team gave its fans a preview of what is to come in the 2016 season Saturday afternoon at the Cardinal & Gold Scrimmage inside Hilton Coliseum. The Cardinal team won all four sets competed on the day 25-16, 25-21, 25-23 and 25-14.
Head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch experimented with many lineups, with all the Cyclones taking part and getting many reps to show they are ready to contribute in six days' time against Wichita State. The competition also gave ISU fans their first look at Cyclone newcomers Sami Hillmer, Anna Kiel and Genesis Miranda.
A point of emphasis for the Cyclones across many seasons has been returning its blocking to a higher level. On Saturday, ISU showed signs of heading in that direction again, combining for 16.0 total blocks in the match. Samara West finished the match with eight total blocks (two solo, six assists).
Another Cyclone returned to the court in the form of assistant coach Jen Malcom, who starred for the Cardinal and Gold from 2006-08. With Joe Lynch (coach's decision) and Dawn Sullivan (injury) both on the sidelines, Malcom stepped up among the coaching staff, playing middle blocker for all four sets for the Gold squad. She finished the match with three kills and three digs.
