AMES, Iowa – Despite a strong attacking performance by Jess Schaben, the Iowa State volleyball team fell to No. 18 Creighton 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-22) Sunday afternoon at Hilton Coliseum. Both the Cyclones and Bluejays finished the Iowa State Challenge with a 1-1 record.
Schaben led the Iowa State attack with 20 kills, her second career match with at least 20. The Cyclone defensive effort was led by Branen Berta, who posted a career-best 26 digs.
Iowa State Offense Powers to First Set Win
Iowa State offense sputtered early, but was being bailed out early by some poor Creighton serving. The advantage behind the service line became more apparent with Iowa State firing a pair of early aces as the Cyclones built up a six-point edge at 12-6. The visiting Jays showed some determination, playing some gritty volleyball to fight their way back into the set at 15-13. However, ISU's attack was too much for the Jays as Ciara Capezio and Jess Schaben got hot to push the Cyclone edge back to 20-14. Iowa State was able to claim the first set when Schaben powered her fifth kill of the frame over to make it 25-19 ISU.
Creighton Storms Back to Even Match
Iowa State was strong once again in the early parts of the set, using some more quality serving and some great back-row attacking from Schaben. The sophomore showed her prowess of being able to attack from deep, as she helped push ISU to a 11-7 lead. After posting no kills in the first set, Samara West got involved in set two, with her three kills helping get the Cyclones move their lead to 16-11. The Jays did not go quietly into the night, as a late set run via some strong blocking tied the set up at 20-20. Creighton moved ahead 23-22 on a Lauren Smith kill, and evened the match when Lydia Dimke's setter dump found the donut to give the Jays the set 25-22.
ISU Unable to Close Gaps as Jays Take Third
Creighton's strong blocking carried over into the third, as ISU fell behind early to the strong CU frontline. The Cyclones struggled to find a rhythm on offense, which allowed the Bluejays to move ahead 9-3. ISU was welcomed back into the set via a 4-0 run which was powered by a pair of Schaben kills and a pair of Jays errors to make it 11-9 CU. Iowa State missed many chances to bring the set back to level, but finally got there at 16-16 when Schaben buried one from the back row. Creighton were able to sneak back ahead by two, at 18-16, and the Cyclones struggled to once again close the gap. The Jays took the set 25-21, when Schaben's serve to stay in the frame went long, one of five ISU service errors in the frame which yielded no aces.
Creighton Pulls Away Late to Take Match
It wasn't until Creighton's Marysa Wilkinson and Megan Ballenger combined for a block to make it 11-9 CU that either team was able to get ahead by more than a singular point. ISU was able to tie it at 11s, but the Jays were back ahead by two at 13-11. Schaben delivered her 18th kill to tie things back up at 14-14. The Jays took the lead for good on a Grace Lazard service error, as ISU only had the match back to one point again at 19-18 and 22-21 CU. Jaali Winters recorded her 18th kill of the match to close the set 25-22 and the match 3-1 to Creighton.
