AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State volleyball team makes its first road trip of 2016 this weekend, as ISU makes the short journey West for a trio of matches in Nebraska. The action begins on Thursday, when the Cyclones take on Omaha at Baxter Arena, with a 7 p.m. first serve. After the match against the Mavericks, ISU heads to Lincoln for the Nebraska Invite, which will begin Friday at 6 p.m. against 2015 NCAA Champion and No. 1 Nebraska at the Devaney Center. The Cyclones will take on Syracuse inside Devaney on Saturday at 5 p.m.
Tickets to the match against Omaha are on sale now online (click here), or on the night of the match at Baxter Arena. Due to the expented walk-up traffic for the match, fans are encouraged to buy tickets in advance. The match will be streamed online via Omaha's Mavs All-Access, a subscription-based service. Iowa State started the season 1-1, sweeping Wichita State and falling to then-No. 18 Creighton in four sets at the Iowa State Challenge inside Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones will be facing a daunting challenge in the shape of the No. 1 Cornhuskers. Nebraska was very strong at the VERT Challenge in Eugene, Oregon last weekend, Disposing of then-No. 10 Florida in four sets, and sweeping No. 2 Texas. Meanwhile, Omaha and Syracuse will be looking to bounce-back from disappointing winless starts to the season.
The match against Omaha inside Baxter Arena will be special for head coach Christy Johnson-Lynch and Samara West. The redshirt junior middle blocker West is a graduate of Omaha North High School, and played club ball at Omaha Starlings. Johnson-Lynch is also an Omaha native, graduating from Millard North High School, whom she led to a state championship, and where she also served as head coach for a season before entering college volleyball. In Spring 2015, Johnson-Lynch was inducted into the Millard North Athletics Hall of Fame, and the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame.
As a player at Nebraska, Johnson-Lynch led the Cornhuskers to the program's first national title in 1995, earning First Team All-America and Academic All-America honors during her senior campaign.
Iowa State also has a Syracuse connection via assistant coach Jen Malcom. She started her collegiate volleyball career with the Orange, playing there in 2004-05 before transferring to Iowa State and playing for the Cardinal and Gold in 2007-08.
