FORT WORTH, Texas – Iowa State fell at TCU, 41-20, Saturday in the Big 12 opener at Amon G. Carter Stadium. The Cyclones fall to 0-3 (0-1 Big 12), while TCU moves to 2-1(1-0 Big 12) on the season.
The Cyclones cut the Horned Frog lead to 10-7 early in the second quarter on an eight-yard rush, as Joel Lanning bulled through a TCU defender to find pay dirt with 12:18 to play in the second quarter. The momentum looked to be in Iowa State's favor when the Cyclone defense appeared to stuff a TCU rush on 4th and short. However, after the ball was spotted, TCU was awarded a first down.
The Horned Frogs would take advantage and convert on a one-yard touchdown rush later in the drive. TCU punched in another short touchdown run late in the half to extend its lead to 24-7.
The hosts opened the third stanza with a 75-yard drive that culminated in a 25-yard touchdown pass from Kenny Hill to Kyle Hicks. Iowa State answered with a long drive capped by a 25-yard field goal by Cole Netten to cut the TCU lead to 31-10.
TCU scored twice more to push the lead to 41-10 before Iowa State got back on the board. A screen pass for 41 yards from Lanning to Deshaunte Jones set the Cyclones up with first and goal. Lanning would later punch it in on a one-yard rush.
Netten later booted in a 30-yard field goal with 1:29 to play, cutting the TCU lead to 41-20 on the final scoring play of the game.
Keys of the Game
The TCU offense was productive all game long, amassing 481 yards on a 6.7 yards-per-play clip. Despite having a nearly six-minute advantage in time of possession, the Cyclones were not able to keep pace with the explosive Horned Frog attack.
Players of Note
Trever Ryen provided a spark for the Iowa State offense, posting career highs in catches and receving yards. The junior from Ida Grove, Iowa, hauled in six catches for 58 yards, including a season-long 32-yard catch.
Jay Jones tallied just three tackles, but showed up elsewhere in the box score, registering two pass break-ups, as well as Iowa State's lone quarterback hurry of the game. His two PBU's tie a career-best effort.
