AMES, Iowa – Saturday's great day in Iowa State Athletics wrapped up with the No. 22 Cyclones upsetting No. 11 Kansas 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 19-25, 25-23) at Hilton Coliseum. The win improved ISU to 16-4 overall on the season, 7-3 in Big 12 play. KU is now 19-4 overall, 8-2 in league play.
Iowa State was led by 19 kills at a .471 hitting percentage by Samara West, while ISU got double-doubles from Jess Schaben (18 kills, 19 digs) and Alexis Conaway (16 kills, 13 digs). Hali Hillegas led the back row with 24 digs.
First Set: Iowa State 25 Kansas 18
Kansas held the early edge, but a 4-0 ISU run on the serve of Genesis Miranda got ISU ahead 9-7. Kansas kept the Cyclones in check, but Izzy Enna came in to fire off a 6-0 run to put Iowa State ahead 20-13. It was an all-around strong effort for ISU, hitting .356 while recording 2.5 blocks to slow the KU attack. Iowa State got ahead 1-0 when Tori Miller's serve went into the net at 25-18.
Second Set: Iowa State 25 Kansas 19
Powered by a Jess Schaben ace, ISU got the first four points of the set, and never looked back. ISU went on an 8-2 run that got them ahead 14-8. The Cyclones were able to take advantage of a collection of KU attack errors to hold the Jayhawks to a .068 hitting clip for the frame. Iowa State moved 2-0 when Samara West recorded her 10th kill of the match to make it 25-19 ISU.
Third Set: Kansas 25 Iowa State 19
The Jayhawks came out strong in the third set, building up an 8-4 advantage by getting the ball to their two-time First Team All-American, Kelsie Payne. While the KU attack improved to .324 for the set, Iowa State committed unforced attack errors that kept the home team to a .186 hitting clip for the frame. Kansas narrowed the ISU advantage to 2-1 for the match when Avery Rhodes' shot sailed wide to give KU the frame 25-19.
Fourth Set: Iowa State 25 Kansas 23
Eight ties and a pair of lead changes highlighted the first half of the fourth frame, with both teams using scrappy defense to keep the other off the board. With the Hilton Coliseum crowd behind them, Iowa State went on a 5-1 run to get some breathing room at 14-11. The Cyclone block stepped up to help finish things off, getting 3.5 blocks and holding KU to a .163 hitting clip. Alexis Conaway and Grace Lazard stuffed Kayla Cheadle to close up the match 25-23.
Player of the Game
Samara West. The redshirt senior was the go-to hitter for Iowa State Saturday night, leading all players with 19 kills at a .471 hitting percentage. West made herself available throughout the match, as she had at least four kills in each of the sets.
