CONWAY, South Carolina – Iowa State got a dynamic performance from Nick Weiler-Babb, as the Cyclones got into the win column for the first time this season with a 104-98 win over Appalachian State at the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach Thursday inside the HTC Center. The win makes ISU 1-2 on the season, while ASU drops to 2-1.
The Cyclones' victory was paced by an astonishing performance from Nick Weiler-Babb, with the redshirt junior posting a career-high 23 points, to go with a career-best seven assists and a career-high-tying seven rebounds. Donovan Jackson led ISU scorers with a career-best 26 points, while Cameron Lard marked his ISU debut with a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Lindell Wigginton (career-high 17 points) and Jeff Beverly (10 points) were also in double figures.
How it Happened
With Appalachian State not bashful to shoot, with 23 of its 37 first half shots being from 3-point range, that meant a lot of work for the Cyclones to do on the boards. The season debuts of Hans Brase and Cameron Lard helped give ISU a 23-to-19 edge on the boards in the first half. The Cyclone lead was guided by Donovan Jackson and Nick Weiler-Babb, with the two combining for five 3-pointers in the first frame.
The high-pace and scoring continued at the start of the second half, with Lindell Wiggington's long 3-pointer pushing the Cyclones ahead by 10 at 61-51. The Mountaineers kept its close, bringing the Cyclone advantage down to four, before Weiler-Babb took over. Weiler-Babb sparked a 10-0 run with a couple of crucial transition passes that made five points, and then pulled up at the top of the key for 3 of his own at 73-59.
Despite Solomon Young sitting much of the second half with four fouls, the ISU offense still clicked, with the lead eventually expanding to 18 at 79-61. The Mountaineers made a final push as the Cyclone fouls racked up, bringing the Cyclones lead down to eight a couple of times, but Jackson and Weiler-Babb were too much for ASU to overcome as ISU locked in its first win of the season.
