FORT WORTH, Texas – No. 23 Iowa State recorded its 20th win of the season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-14) sweep of TCU Saturday night at the University Recreation Center. The win improved ISU to 20-6 overall and 10-5 in the Big 12. The Frogs are now 11-16 and 3-12 in league play.
Jess Schaben became the 10th player in Iowa State history to reach 1,000 career, finishing with a match-high 12 kills on the night. The Iowa State serve recorded 10 service aces, the first time the Cyclones reached double figures in a match since 2014 against VCU.
First Set: Iowa State 25 TCU 19
The first set featured a variety of runs, with both teams struggling to side out. Grace Lazard and the Cyclone block posted a 3-0 run to get ahead 12-9, but TCU responded with a 5-0 run to get ahead 14-12. Izzy Enna then went behind the service line and served up a pair of aces as part of a 5-0 run to get back ahead 17-14. Jess Schaben had four kills to help spark a 6-1 run to close the set, which ended when Abigail Buckingham hit a shot into the net at 25-19, ISU.
Second Set: Iowa State 25 TCU 17
TCU took the first four points of the second set, but Iowa State bounced back strong to take seven of the next eight points and pull ahead at 7-5. The ISU defense was stout again, holding the Frogs to .057 hitting with 3.0 total blocks in support. The Cyclones used an 8-1 run to build the set advantage to eight at 18-10. ISU got ahead 2-0 when Lexi MacLean served one into the net at 25-17 Iowa State.
Third Set: Iowa State 25 TCU 14
Iowa State bounced back from dropping the first point of the frame with a 6-1 run that kept them ahead the rest of the way. The Cyclones' serve continued to roll, as ISU had four aces in the third to get up to 10 for the match. The Cyclone defense was there again, recording 4.0 blocks and holding the Frogs to .069 hitting in the set. The match wrapped up on a kill by Hannah Bailey at 25-14 Cyclones.
Player of the Game
Jess Schaben. It was a historic evening for the Cyclone outside, as she became the 10th player in Iowa State history to get over 1,000 career digs late in the third set. The junior finished the match with 12 kills and seven digs.
