AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State men's basketball team (4-2, 0-0 Big 12) handed Western Illinois (4-1, 0-0 Summit) its first loss of the season, defeating the Leathernecks 70-45.
Iowa State's defense was great in the contest. The Cyclones forced 16 Western Illinois turnovers, which led to 24 ISU points. They also held the Leathernecks to just 19-of-58 shooting, including 5-25 from behind the 3-point line.
Freshman Lindell Wigginton paced the Cyclones on the offensive side of the ball. He scored a career-high 21 points on 8-16 shooting, including 4-8 from downtown. He also hauled in five boards and dished out six assists.
How it Happened
At the under-12 minute timeout in the first half, the Cyclones trailed the Leathernecks 14-12. Iowa State went on a 12-0 run to open up a 26-14 advantage. Western Illinois chipped away at the ISU lead to close out the first stanza and the Cyclones went to the break with a 29-25 lead.
The Cyclone offense came to life after the break. Iowa State shot 17-32 from the field in the second half and netted 4-11 three point attempts.
Midway through the second half, the Cyclones pieced together a 13-0 run that would ultimately put the game out of reach. During that stretch freshmen Cameron Lard, Terrence Lewis and Lindell Wigginton were responsible for all of ISU's scores.
Lard finished the game with a career-high 14 points on 7-9 shooting. Lewis also reached double figures, scoring a career-high 12 points.
Players of Note
Freshman Lindell Wigginton netted his first 20-point game as a Cyclone with a career-high 21-point offensive performance. Wigginton was busy in other facets of the Cyclone victory, grabbing five rebounds and collecting six assists.
Freshman Cameron Lard was a huge part of Iowa State's 13-0 run in the second half. 12 of his 14 points came in the second half. He also brought in four rebounds, including two on the offensive glass.
Freshman Terrence Lewis was third Iowa State frosh to record a career-high in scoring. Lewis did most of his scoring in the second half as well, scoring 10 of his 12 points on 4-7 shooting.
It was another stat-stuffing performance from redshirt junior Nick Weiler-Babb. He connected for 10 assists, tallied six points and grabbed seven rebounds. Weiler-Babb also accounted for a steal on the defensive end.

The Cyclones will get all of next week off. They'll return to action on Monday, Dec. 4 at Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State is set to take on Northern Illinois at 8 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPNU.
