DES MOINES, Iowa – Lindell Wigginton was the spark that lit the fire for Iowa State Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena as the freshman's big second half pushed the Cyclones to a 76-65 win over in-state rival UNI. The win is Iowa State's eighth in a row as the Cyclones are now 8-2 on the season. The Panthers fall to 8-3 on the season.
After a quiet first half from the ISU backcourt, Wigginton burst out for a 15-point second half. The freshman finished with 20 points, his fourth 20-point effort in the last five games, to go with seven rebounds and two assists. Five of the eight dressed Cyclones were in double figures as Wigginton was joined by Nick Weiler-Babb (15), Jeff Beverly (10), Donovan Jackson (10) and Cameron Lard (10).
How it Happened
Many of the stories across ISU's seven-game win streak has revolved around the talented backcourt trio, so it was refreshing to see the Cyclones' other two starters, Jeff Beverly and Solomon Young, get Iowa State's first five points. After being shutout for the first 3:47 of the contest, UNI went on a 9-0 run to pull ahead 9-5. The Panthers pushed ahead by six at 21-15, but Lindell Wigginton finally got into the contest, with the Canadian knotting it up at 23-23 from the free throw line.
Trailing 33-30 to begin the second half, ISU came out aggressive and briefly snuck ahead at 36-35 on Donovan Jackson's first points of the game. The Cyclones did not see the lead again until 43-42 when Cameron Lard finished off a fast break with a lay-in, but again UNI made a crucial shot to get ahead.
Wigginton pushed ISU ahead again from the charity stripe at 51-50 after a great hustle play by Terrence Lewis to keep the ball on the Cyclones' side of the court. Wigginton went off from there, as he brought the ISU fans at Wells Fargo Arena onto their feet, as the Cardinal and Gold went on an 11-0 run that made a 50-47 deficit a 58-50 lead. The lead got to double figures at 64-54 when Nick Weiler-Babb drained a late-in-the-shot-clock 3-pointer.
Iowa State iced the game at the free throw line. The Cyclones missed their first two free throws of the contest, but were brilliant from the charity stripe from there, making 19 of their last 22 to close out the game and extend the winning streak.
Players of Note
Lindell Wigginton's historic freshman season continued. After a five-point first half, Wigginton dominated, racking up 15 points in the second half and scoring nine of the 11 points on the run that make a three-point deficit an eight-point lead for the Cyclones. He also had seven rebounds and two assists.
Cameron Lard's energy off the bench was crucial again, as his eight first half points allowed ISU to stay within grasp of the Panthers with the shots not falling from deep. He also showed some defensive prowess, recording three steals after coming into the contest with zero swipes in his career.
Nick Weiler-Babb just missed out on a double-double, as his 15 points was joined by nine rebounds and four assists. The Cyclones' point guard has been in double figures eight times this season.
