Cyclones Dominant in Pair of 4-0 Victories

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team (5-2, 0-0 Big 12) swept a pair of matches on Friday against Omaha (2-3, 0-0 Summit) and Drake (2-2, 0-0 MVC) at the Knapp Tennis Center on the campus of Drake University.

The Cyclones were impressive in their opening match against the Omaha Mavericks, winning 4-0.

Doubles play started the rout for the Cyclones as they won all three matches in convincing fashion. Karen Alvarez and Regina Espindola were especially strong in their match by beating the pairing of Kenzie Hill and Hannah Hills 6-0.

Maty Cancini led the Iowa State effort in singles play. Cancini beat Janelle Wilson by a score of 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 2 matchup. Espindola and Bonadonna also won their singles matches to finish off the Mavericks.

Iowa State followed up that performance with another dominating win against in-state foe Drake.

Once again the Cyclones were in control early by winning the doubles point. The pairings of Margarita Timakova/Annabella Bonadonna and Espindola/Alvarez both won their matches 6-2 against their opponents from Drake.

Espindola and Bonadonna won their matches to each go 2-0 on the day in singles. Alvarez also won in straight sets for the Cyclones to grab the early win for Iowa State.

The Cyclones will complete the weekend with their home-opener against the Illinois State Redbirds (3-2, 0-0 MVC). The Redbirds are in Rockford, Ill. tomorrow for a match against Northern Illinois before heading to Urbandale to face-off against Iowa State.

The dual against Illinois State will be Life Time Fitness in Urbandale, Iowa.

The match will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday.
