AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State track and field team will be represented by three individual entries and a relay at the 2017 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 10-11, the NCAA announced Tuesday night. The Cyclone women, who are ranked No. 20 in the country by the USTFCCCA, will be represented by Jhoanmy Luque (long jump, triple jump) and Jasmine Staebler (800-meter run). The ISU men will have its school-record 4x400 relay team of Eric Fogltanz, Ben Kelly, Roshon Roomes and Jaymes Dennison competing for the Cardinal and Gold.
The Cyclone women's team and its return to the top-25 has come via the strong performances of Luque and Staebler. Luque, who was the Women's High Point Scorer at last weekend's Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Championships after her sweep of the long jump and triple jump crowns, is returning to indoor nationals for a second-straight season after qualifying for the meet last season. Staebler will be making her NCAA Indoors debut at Texas A&M.
Luque, set personal bests en route to her pair of conference titles last weekend. In the long jump, the Venezuelan leaped 21-5 1/4, just a quarter of an inch off the school record. In the triple jump, Luque posted a career-best effort of 44-9 1/2. The efforts marked the first conference titles of her career for the three-time All-American. Luque will be the No. 4 seed for both competitions.
Staebler, a sophomore, is the No. 8 seed for the women's 800-meter run, which will have its semifinal on Friday, March 10, to get into the Saturday final. The Big 12 runner-up in the 800, Staebler set Iowa State's school record in the event with a 2:03.08 at the Iowa State Classic on February 11.
The men's 4x400-meter team consists entirely of newcomers to the Iowa State program, and they have all made an impact. A pair of JUCO transfers, a Division III transfer and a walk-on who was on the Iowa State Club Track Team last year. The quartet has come together to re-write ISU's history in the mile relay. At the Alex Wilson Invitational on February 18, the group delivered on their promise to break the Cyclone school record with a 3:05.61. The group will be the No. 11 seed in the final event of the competition on Saturday, March 11.
All competition at the NCAA Indoor Championships will be streamed live on ESPN3. ESPN2 and ESPNU will air replays at a later date.
