URBANDALE, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team (13-2, 1-0 Big 12) defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers 4-2 in the conference opener at Life Time Fitness on Saturday.
Iowa State is 6-0 all-time against the Mountaineers. The victory also ran the Cyclone win streak to double digits at 10.
Iowa State had to fight back once again in doubles after dropping the first match. Annabella Bonadonna and Margarita Timakova won a close match against Sofia Duran and Habiba Shaker 6-4. Maty Cancini and Sami Budai eased past their Mountaineer opponents 6-3.
Maty Cancini led the Cyclones in singles as she got an impressive straight set win at the No. 2 spot. Cancini beat Kaja Mrgole 7-5, 6-1. Margarita Timakova continued her hot streak as she downed Christina Jordan 7-6, 6-0.
Regina Espindola finished off the Mountaineers with a 7-6, 6-1 victory at the No. 3 spot for Iowa State. It was her 11th-straight win.
Iowa State will return to action on Wednesday when the Cyclones travel to Las Cruces, New Mexico to take on New Mexico State at 3:00 p.m.
