OKLAHOMA CITY – Iowa State battled back from 12 points down against No. 24 Kansas State, but could not complete the comeback as the Cyclones fell 74-67 Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship at Chesapeake Energy Arena. Iowa State drops to 18-12 on the season, while K-State improved to 22-9 en route to advancing to tomorrow's semifinals.
Iowa State was down 50-38 with 2:17 to go in the third quarter, but fought back to tie the contest at 56-56. However, the Cyclones would go nearly six minutes without adding to their total as K-State was able to pull back ahead.
The ISU effort was led by 21 points from Emily Durr, her third-career 20-point game, while Heather Bowe (13) and Seanna Johnson (12) joined her in double figures.
How it Happened
A pair of stars got in foul trouble early as ISU's Seanna Johnson and K-State's Breanna Lewis each had two fouls within four minutes of the contest starting. ISU was able to battle through the adversity better, moving out to a 13-4 advantage. The Wildcats rolled the dice to keep Lewis out there, but a moving screen got the leading scorer of the Cats with her third foul.
After going 2-of-15 in the first quarter, K-State broke out of it in the second, with back-to-back 3-pointers pushing the Wildcats ahead 19-16. The Cyclones missed their first 11 field goal attempts of the second period, but Heather Bowe broke the duck with a lay-in to cut it to 21-20 Cats. Jadda Buckley led the transition for a lay-in to put ISU back ahead briefly, 24-23, but K-State was able to get another bucket to push back ahead, 25-24, at the half.
The Cyclones broke out of their shooting slump to start the third, making four of five to push back ahead 33-30. The Cyclones were finally able to get Johnson going as well, as the offense finally clicked. However, the Wildcat offense started clicking at an even higher rate, draining nine of 12 to start the third, including a 14-0 run open up their largest lead at 50-38. The Cyclones worked back hard to finish the frame, cutting the deficit to seven points to begin the fourth quarter.
The momentum carried over, as ISU got the first five points of the quarter to cut it to a one-possession game. Two possessions later, it was a tie game via a steal and lay-in by Johnson at 56-56. KSU's Lewis started making the difference, scoring six-straight to make it 62-56 K-State. The Cyclones missed eight-straight shots, going on a drought of 5:49 without ticking the scoreboard over.
