AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State women's basketball team (18-13, 9-9 Big 12) closed out the 2016-17 season with its 17th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history. The Cyclones finished the season on a high note after rattling off five-straight Big 12 wins to close conference action in fifth in the Big 12. The five-straight conference wins marked the first time ISU has won five-straight Big 12 games since 2008-09. Iowa State also finished in the upper half of the Big 12 for the eighth time in the last nine seasons.Â
Cyclone Quick Hits
- The Iowa State women's basketball team (18-13, 9-9 Big 12) capped off another successful season with the 17th appearance in school history in the NCAA Tournament. The Cyclones used a late-season push to break into the tournament field, winning their last five Big 12 games to close the season with a 9-9 conference record. All of Iowa State's 17 tournament appearances have come under the direction of head coach Bill Fennelly.
- Iowa State was one of 13 teams to earn an NCAA berth in 10 of the last 11 seasons, joining UConn, Duke, Baylor, DePaul, Florida State, Louisville, Notre Dame, Maryland, Oklahoma, Stanford, Tennessee and Texas A&M.
- Iowa State sophomore Bridget Carleton earned unanimous All-Big 12 first team honors and Jadda Buckley and Seanna Johnson garnered honorable mention honors.
- Seanna Johnson capped her career seventh in school history in points (1,645), third in rebounds (1,052) and is second in school history in double-doubles (33). She became the third player in ISU history with 1,000 rebounds and just the second player in ISU history with 1,500 career points and 1,000 rebounds against Texas Tech, joining all-time great Angie Welle.
- Jadda Buckley wrapped up her ISU career ranking sixth all-time in Iowa State history with 456 career assists. Her 456 career assists rank 34th nationally among active leaders and third among juniors.
- The Cyclones finished the season at third in the nation in free throw percentage (79.9%). ISU led the nation in 2012-13 and 2013-14 at the charity stripe.
- Bridget Carleton closed the season second in the nation in free throw percentage (93.9), while Buckley finished 19th netting 87.6 percent from the charity stripe. Buckley's 86.7 career free-throw percentage is third in the ISU record book and was second in the nation among active career leaders, just under Washington's Kelsey Plum's 88.1 percent. Carleton sits in first in school history netting 88.0 percent in her career as well.
- Iowa State had three of the Big 12's top 11 scorers with Johnson fourth (15.8), Carleton in sixth (15.0) and Buckley in 11th (13.9). No other Big 12 school has more than two in the top 11.
- Johnson closed her career sitting at fourth in school history in free throws made (392) and fifth in free throws attempted (516).
- The 2016-17 season marks the 22nd in the tenure of Bill Fennelly. Fennelly has led Iowa State to 17 NCAA Tournament appearances, which is tied with Oklahoma as the most of any Big 12 team since 1997. Fennelly boasts a 465-236 record at Iowa State and a 631-289 record in his 28-year career as a head coach. His 631 career wins lists him in the top-20 in the NCAA among active coaches.
