AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State offense defeated the Cyclone defense, 50-44, in a scrimmage Saturday afternoon in Jack Trice Stadium. Attendance was estimated at 15,000.
Head football coach Matt Campbell split the teams in an offense vs. defense scrimmage and utilized a revised scoring system listed below:

There were plenty of highlights on both sides of the football:
Offensive Highlights
-On his third possession at quarterback, Jacob Park completed passes to Chase Allen and Trever Ryen in leading the offense down the field for its first score, which came on a 20-yard run from Mike Warren. Garrett Owens was successful on his first kick as a Cyclone, knocking the PAT through the uprights to tie it at 17-17.
- With a drive starting on the defense's 30-yard line, Park hit Carson Epps for a 23-yard gain down the sideline. The drive ended with a three-yard plunge from Warren, for his second score of the day.
- Kyle Kempt led his unit to its first score of the day by connecting with Denver Johnson three times for 22 yards before rushing for a two-yard touchdown.
- Owens hit a 42-yard field goal in his only long distance attempt, which was set up by a Park to Hakeem Butler connection of 17 yards.
- Connor Assalley hit a 45-yard field goal to end the scrimmage.
- Sheldon Croney led the rushing attack with 39 yards on 10 carries…Warren added 28 yards on four carries.
- At QB, only Park and Kempt played…Park finished 7-for-12 for 97 yards, while Kempt was 11-for-17 for 109 yards.
- Johnson had four receptions for 39 yards to lead all pass catchers.
Defensive Highlights
- The game opened with the offense starting backed up and the defense made it pay. Evrett Edwards forced a fumble on the offense's second possession that resulted in a safety and Stephon Pickett-Brown added one of his own when he blitzed off the corner to touch quarterback Kyle Kempt for a second safety.
- Joel Lanning picked off a Park pass that was off the hands of Ryen and took it in from 37-yards out for a touchdown.
- Marcel Spears Jr. had six tackles, including two sacks…Mackenro Alexander and Tymar Sutton also had six tackles.
- In addition to his interception for a touchdown, Lanning added four tackles in his linebacker debut.
Iowa State begins its 2017 season on Sept. 2 vs. UNI in Jack Trice Stadium.
