AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team will be bolstered this season by the addition of Montana transfer Sydney Stites, an outfielder with two seasons of eligibility remaining. Stites was named the 2016 Big Sky Freshman of the Year and is a two-time Big Sky All-Tournament Team honoree.
Stites played two seasons at Montana for current Iowa State head coach Jamie Pinkerton, before deciding to transfer when Pinkerton was tabbed to take over the Cyclone program.
"Sydney will be a very good addition to our program," Pinkerton said. "She has been instilled with a work ethic that will help her not only be successful on the field, but in the classroom. She is a versatile athlete that brings value to our team because I am comfortable in her abilities to play different positions. She will help solidify our young lineup offensively by providing power and RBI production."
Stites, who hails from Bozeman, Montana, started all 115 games during her time at Montana. She joins the Iowa State program with a career batting average of .321, 19 home runs and 85 RBIs. In 2016, Stites was an All-Big Sky First Team selection while hitting .383 with 77 hits, 18 doubles and 12 home runs.
In 2017, Stites helped lead Montana, in just its third season of having a softball program, to a Big Sky conference title and a spot in the NCAA tournament. She also holds the Montana program single-season records for runs (52), hits (77) and total bases (135). Stites, a two-time Academic All-Big Sky selection, plans to major in human biology at Iowa State.
The Cyclones will be in action this weekend to open their 2017 fall schedule. Iowa State takes on DMACC on Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Admission to the game is free.
