AMES, Iowa – The final fall NACDA Learfield Directors' Cup standings were released this morning and the Iowa State Athletics Department recorded its best fall finish in school history.
Iowa State is ranked 17th nationally with 221 points, which is currently the second-best total among Big 12 institutions.
"The Learfield Directors' Cup is a great indicator of a well-rounded athletics department," Jamie Pollard, Iowa State's Director of Athletics said. "Our record-breaking performance - which puts us among the nation's elite - is as great tribute to our coaches and student-athletes from the fall season."
The Directors' Cup, an award given annually since 1993-94, charts the overall success of Division I athletics programs.
Iowa State scored points in four of its five sponsored sports in the fall season, tallying 54 points for women's cross country, 72 points for men's cross country, 50 points for women's volleyball and 45 points for football.
Iowa State's previous best fall point total in the Directors' Cup was 191 in 2010.
The Iowa State men's cross country team finished seventh in the nation, its best showing since winning the 1994 NCAA title. The Cyclone women long distance runners placed 20th at the NCAA Championships, the school's seventh top-20 showing in the last nine seasons.
Iowa State's volleyball program made the second round of the NCAA Tournament, earning its 12th-straight NCAA appearance and a top-25 national ranking in the final AVCA poll.
The Cyclone football team won their first bowl game since 2009 with a 21-20 victory over No. 19 Memphis in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl. ISU set or tied school records in league wins (5), victories over ranked opponents (3) and triumphs on the road (5).
