AMES, Iowa – Lindell Wigginton scored a career-high 30 points to pace Iowa State (10-6 overall, 1-4 Big 12) to a 75-65 win over Baylor (11-6 overall, 1-4 Big 12) Saturday afternoon in Hilton Coliseum.
Wigginton got off to a hot start, tallying 17 points in the first half. He ended the game 8-of-17 from the field and 5-of-10 from beyond the arc, setting his career high in 3-pointers made in a game and helping the Cyclones pick up their first league win along the way.
Wigginton became just the fourth Cyclone freshman in school history to record 30 or more points in a game (Craig Brackins, Curtis Stinson, Barry Stevens).
Solomon Young played his part with a double-double (11 points, 12 rebounds), matching his career high in caroms. Nick Weiler-Babb added 15 points and 10 dimes in the victory.
How It Happened
The first half featured six lead changes and four ties, but the Cyclones went into the break with a 34-27 lead behind a late rally.
Wigginton spurred an 11-2 run to close the half, drilling a trio of 3-pointers. His first trey, which was also ISU's first of the game, gave the Cyclones a 26-25 lead with 3:20 remaining. He then ended the first half with a baseline curl 3-pointer at the buzzer to close the half with 17 points.
It didn't take long for the Bears to regain the lead as the Cyclones were mired in a shooting slump at the beginning of the second half. King McClure buried a 3-pointer with 12:26 left in the game to put BU up 45-42. ISU made just 3-of-14 shots to open the second period.
Both Young and Cameron Lard picked up their third fouls in the early moments of the second half, sending both to the bench.
The Cyclones crawled back, however. Wigginton knocked down a corner trey and Weiler-Babb scored four points in an 11-2 Cyclone run, as the home team took a 64-58 lead with 4:16 left in the game.
Wigginton then gave the Cyclones a seven-point lead (69-62) with a trey at the 1:32 mark and never looked back.
Players of Note
Lindell Wigginton scored 17 of his 30 points in the opening period, recording his seventh 20-point game of the year. He is just the fourth Cyclone freshman to score 30 or more points in a game.
