AMES, Iowa – No. 25 Iowa State Gymnastics team scored a 195.275 in route to defeating Texas Woman's University, who finished with a 191.050. The Cyclones (6-1, 0-1 Big 12) had a strong performance on beam and Assistant Coach Kristin White is ready for the team to continue this success for the remainder of the season.
"From a mental standpoint this was the best thing that could've happened to us," White said. "Last meet they were disappointed and they know they have so much to offer. For them to hit tonight it will only give them more confidence going forward."
Vault
Iowa State scored a 48.975 on vault for the second time this season. The Cyclones were led by Meaghan Sievers scoring a 9.850, the second time she has done that this season. Haylee Young scored a 9.825 followed by Kelsey Paz scoring a 9.800. Freshman Sophia Steinmeyer scored a 9.775. Kelly Martin who had started on vault in every event this season scored a 9.725.
Floor
For the second time in 2018, Iowa State scored a 48.925 on floor. Haylee Young tied her season high scoring a 9.850 tonight. Both Kelsey Paz and Briana Ledesma scored a 9.800. Meaghan Sievers notched a 9.775, and Sophia Steinmeyer recorded her career high on with a 9.700.
Beam
Iowa State scored a 48.900 on beam tonight. Cassie Diaz and Molly Russ made their season debut which helped the Cyclones tonight. Three gymnasts scored a 9.825 on beam, with Meaghan Sievers, Casandra Diaz and Kelsey Paz doing the honors. Haylee Young notched a 9.800 and Sophia Steinmeyer scored a 9.625.
Sophomore Casandra Diaz:
"It was so exciting to compete tonight. I honestly thought I wouldn't be back this season. I'm just glad I got the opportunity to compete and I just wanted to go out there and show them I was ready."
Assistant Coach Kristin White:
"Molly and Cassie did an excellent job," Assistant Coach Kristin White explained, "They have been working so hard in the gym. If they had a moment to get in, we knew that they would be special. I can't wait to seem them to continue to work and getting even better on beam."
Bars
Iowa State scored a 48.475 on bars tonight. Meaghan Sievers and Haylee Young both scored 9.825s while Kelsey Paz posted a 9.725. MJ Johnson led off the Cyclone with a 9.650.
Head Coach Jay Ronayne:
"Definitely a much improved performance tonight. We shuffled some people around and it was awesome the way the team got the job done. It was a tough to get a score like this tonight. We didn't help ourselves on bars, we avoided a disaster but Hilary showed some true grit."
All-Around
Haylee Young led the all-around tonight with a score of 39.300. Meaghan Sievers tied her career high with a score of 39.725 and Kelsey Paz recorded an all-around scored of 39.150. This is the first time this season that all three have had and all-around score of 39.000
Up Next
The Cyclones will host a quad-meet next Friday at 6:30 p.m. inside Hilton Coliseum. The teams competing in the event will be Northern Illinois, Yale, and Big 12 opponent and No. 24 West Virginia.
