Cyclones Grab 5-2 Victory in Spring Opener

DES MOINES, Iowa – The Iowa State tennis team (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) clinched a 5-2 win in their home opener against the Augustana Vikings.

Double partners Erin Freeman and Annabella Bonadonna won 6-0 over Augustana's Annika Teske and Kaitlyn Schultz at No. 3, while at No. 2 doubles Ekaterina Repina and Margarita Timakova defeated Grace Goble and Taylor Jackson, 6-4. Cyclones Maty Cancini and Regina Espindola were unable to get themselves through a tough match up against Vikings Berkely Darr and Staniszewska. They fell 6-5 in the No. 1 doubles pairing.

In singles action, four Cyclones finished with wins. Junior Liera Bender won her match over Kaitlyn Schultz at No. 6, 6-2, 6-1. Meanwhile at No. 3 singles, Bonadonna defeated Goble, 6-2, 6-1. At the No. 2 singles matchup, Cancini finished with 6-3, 6-2 win over Berkley Darr. Margarita Timakova won her match against Taylor Jackson, 6-3, 6-2, while Karen Alvarez fell at No. 5 singles match with a 6-3, 6-2 to Annika Teske. Espindola also lost her singles match, falling to Augustana's Kornel Staniszewska, 6-3, 6-2.

ISU will compete again this afternoon versus South Dakota at 3 p.m. at the Life Time Fitness courts in Urbandale.
