AMES, Iowa – Iowa State won its first exhibition contest of the season against Southwest Baptist on Thursday night at Hilton Coliseum, defeating the Bearcats 90-51. The Cyclones got 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting with six assists from senior guard Bridget Carleton in an excellent outing.
Head coach Bill Fennelly used all 14 available players on his bench, with 10 getting at least 10 minutes of playing time. Kristin Scott (16), Inez Nezerwa (14) and Madison Wise (12) joined Carleton in the double-digit scoring column.
How It Happened
The Cyclones battled through a slow start against a feisty Southwest Baptist squad to take a 41-35 lead through 20 minutes of action. Iowa State struggled to find its range from beyond the arc in the early going, but was buoyed by a tidy 9-of-13 shooting performance from two-point range in the second quarter. Carleton had a team-high 12 points at the break, followed by 10 for Nezerwa.
Iowa State broke the game open in the third stanza, out-scoring SBU 27-9 in the quarter. The Cyclones gained momentum with a pair of big runs to get separation from the Bearcats. A 9-0 run less than three minutes into the quarter was capped by back-to-back Carleton buckets to give the Cyclones a 50-37 lead – their largest advantage to that point.
Alexa Middleton and Kristin Scott teamed up to spark a 12-0 ISU spurt late in the quarter, with each chipping in five points during the run, as the Cyclones took a 68-44 lead after 30 minutes of play.
Fennelly's squad continued to stretch the lead in the final quarter, even as the bench emptied, with Iowa State holding Southwest Baptist scoreless over the game's final 4:57.
