IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State fell to No. 18 Iowa 98-84 Thursday night at Caver-Hawkeye Arena in the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series meeting. The loss drops ISU to 7-2 on the year, while UI improved to 7-2. The win for Iowa gives the Hawkeyes an 11-6 lead in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series.
The Cyclones continued to find themselves in holes and deficits they could not dig out of, as Iowa rode a wave of strong shooting, with the Hawkeyes finishing the game shooting 57.4 percent from the field.
In defeat, Iowa State was led by 21 points from Talen Horton-Tucker, his third 20-point game of the season. Marial Shayok posted 19 points, Michael Jacobson 12 and Tyrese Haliburton 10.
How It Happened
Both teams started off with strong shooting efforts, but it was the Hawkeyes that was able to maintain it. The Cyclones were ahead 24-21 with 11 minutes to go, but Iowa went on a 13-0 run which saw the Cyclones go scoreless for almost five minutes to see the Hawks ahead 34-24.
The visitors did well to get back into the frame, as the Cyclones were able to bring the Iowa advantage down to three points on a 3-pointer from Nick Weiler-Babb at 39-36 UI. However, Hawkeyes shot 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the field in the first 20 minutes, with Tyler Cook's put-back dunk in the final seconds giving Iowa a 45-38 halftime lead.
The Cyclones got the first five out of the break to bring the Hawkeye lead down to two, but Iowa bounced back with a 14-2 run to bring its lead back into double figures at 63-47. The Hawkeyes would expand its lead to as many as 20 points during the early portion of the second half.
ISU was able to reel in Iowa a little, bringing the deficit down to eight points on an old-fashioned three-point play by Horton Tucker. Iowa pushed its lead back up to 16 following that, but the Cyclones were able to reduce the disadvantage back into single-digits again at 88-79 on a Horton-Tucker lay-in.
Players of Note
Marial Shayok was one of the bright spots for ISU in the first half, leading ISU with nine in the first 20 minutes. For the game, Shayok posted 19 points, three rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists.
Michael Jacobson kept his run of scoring in double figures to start his Iowa State career alive. Jacobson's ninth-straight outing over 10 points saw him get 12 points.
Talen Horton-Tucker recorded the third 20-point game of his Iowa State career, notching 21 points and a team-high six rebounds.
