Haliburton Breaks Assist Mark In 101-65 Win Over Southern

AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (8-2, 0-0 Big 12) shot 70.2 percent from the field en route to an 101-65 win over Southern (1-9, 0-0 SWAC) Sunday evening in Hilton Coliseum.
It marked the first time the Cyclones shot over 70 percent from the field since hitting 74.4 percent against Georgia in 2004.
The Cyclones had four players in double figures, led by Marial Shayok, who tied his career high with 26 points. Shayok, who recorded his fifth 20-point game of the season, was 11-of-15 from the floor.
Tyrese Haliburton chipped in with 15 points and dished out a school-record 17 assists in the win. He also had two steals. Haliburton's 17 dimes broke the previous mark held by Eric Heft, who had 16 assists vs. Nebraska in 1974.
How It Happened
Iowa State made its first seven shots from the field and used a 12-0 run late in the first half to take control of the game.
Iowa State went into the break with a 46-29 lead, thanks to 12 bench points from Terrence Lewis.
Iowa State made 72.0 percent (18-25 FG) of its shots in the opening period, the best half clip of the season.
The Cyclones continued their hot shooting, making 6-of-7 shots to open the second half en route to a 60-39 lead. ISU never looked back the rest of the way.
Players of Note
Tyrese Haliburton had an outstanding night for the Cyclones, posting 15 points and dishing out a school-record 17 assists. Haliburton was 5-of-7 from the field, including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc.
Marial Shayok posted his fifth 20-point outing of the season, scorching the nets on 11-of-15 shooting en route to a game-high 26 points, tying his career high. Shayok also had five boards in the win.
