OKLAHOMA CITY – Iowa State (23-33, 4-14 Big 12) fell 5-1 to Oklahoma State (38-20, 12-6 Big 12) in the fifth-place game at the 2018 Phillips 66 Big 12 Softball Championship on Saturday. Sami Williams opened the game with a solo home run, but the Cyclones were unable build on the early momentum.
Williams now ranks No. 3 on Iowa State's single-season home runs chart with 12, and moves into a tie with Sydni Jones (2007-10) for seventh in a career homers at Iowa State with 20.
Oklahoma State 5, Iowa State 1
Williams woke up the crowd at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium on Saturday morning by crushing a lead-off home run to left field, giving the Cyclones an early 1-0 lead. It was the sophomore's 12th dinger of the year, becoming just the second player in program history to hit more than 11 home runs in a season (Tori Torrescano).
However, the offense was silent for most of the game from that point forward, as OSU pitchers Emmie Robertson and Samantha Clakley combined to hold Iowa State scoreless over the final six frames.
Oklahoma State's explosive offense broke through to take the lead in the home half of the third inning. The Cowgirls scratched out their first run of the game on an ISU fielding error that allowed Maddi Holcomb to score, and later took the lead on an RBI ground out, scoring an unearned run that made the score 2-1 in favor of Oklahoma State.
The deficit grew with an additional OSU run scoring in the fourth, before a two-run home run by Madi Sue Montgomery put Iowa State in a 5-1 hole in the fifth inning. The Cyclones continued to battle, but struggled offensively outside of Williams, who went 3-of-4 at the plate with a home run and a stolen base on the day.
