Cyclones Upended At Kansas In Game One

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Iowa State (22-29, 3-13 Big 12) dropped game one, 12-4, to Kansas (26-24, 1-15 Big 12) on Friday at Arrocha Ballpark. The Cyclones jumped out to an early 2-0 lead behind a two-run home run by Sydney Stites, but were unable to stem a Jayhawk offensive surge.

Iowa State hit two home runs in the game, totaling 41 on the season to break the school record of 40 previously set in 2013 and 2015.

The Cyclones came out of the gates fast, scoring two runs on three hits in the top of the first inning. Sophomore Sami Williams notched a lead-off single through the right side to start the game. Stites, a junior, then launched a two-run home run to left field. The moon shot was her seventh and Iowa State's 40^th of the season, tying the single-season school record.

However, it was all Jayhawks from that point forward. Kansas responded with a two-run home run off the bat of Harli Ridling in the home half of the first inning to tie the game at 2-2. KU then took the lead, scoring a pair of unearned runs in the second frame on a single up the middle by Erin McGinley.

The Jayhawks plated four more runs in the home half of the third, starting with a two-RBI double for Shelby Gayre. A sac fly, and Iowa State's third error of the game scored two additional runs, as the Kansas lead stretched to 8-2 after three innings.

Freshman Cara Beatty breathed life into the Cyclones with her first career home run in the top of the fifth. The two-run shot to left center field cut KU's lead to 8-4, but it was the last offensive spark of the game for the Cyclones.

The Jayhawks tacked on four more runs in the home half of the sixth inning, including Ridling's second home run of the day, to put the game away.

The Cyclones and Jayhawks return to Arrocha Ballpark on Saturday for game two of the series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
