AMES, Iowa – No. 21 Iowa State took part in its final tune-up for the 2018 season with the Cardinal and Gold Scrimmage on Saturday at Hilton Coliseum. Both teams won two sets, Gold taking the first two 25-21 and 25-22, while Cardinal claimed the final two 25-16 and 25-17.
Leading the way for the Cyclones was Piper Mauck, who dished out 41 assists across the four sets. Grace Lazard powered down 16 kills, while Candelaria Herrera, Jossie Herbst and Jess Schaben all had 11 kills. Hali Hillegas had 24 digs, while Izzy Enna posted 18 digs.
Set One: Gold 25 Cardinal 21
Gold won six of the first seven points to establish an early advantage. After falling behind 12-6, Cardinal began to string some points together and was able to narrow the gap to a pair at 14-12. Gold strung points together again, with a 3-0 run on the Jess Schaben serve taking the lead back to six at 21-15. Gold claimed the first set when Taylor Baranski's serve sailed long at 25-21.
Set Two: Gold 25 Cardinal 22
Cardinal was in charge early in the set, building up a 9-5 lead. However, Piper Mauck led a bounce back 9-0 run to push her Gold squad ahead for good at 17-11. Candelaria Herrera led the Gold team with seven kills in the set, which they clinched when Eleanor Holthaus doubled on an attempted set at 25-22 Gold.
Set Three: Cardinal 25 Gold 16
Cardinal rode a 7-0 run to put an 8-1 lead on the board they would not relinquish. Cardinal hit .370 for the set, led by four kills on five swings from Grace Lazard. On defense, Hillegas added on from her serving during the 7-0 run with seven digs for the frame. Cardinal claimed the set when Jen Malcom's shot sailed wide at 25-16.
Set Four: Cardinal 25 Gold 17
A 4-0 run on the serve of Brooke Andersen put the Cardinal team ahead 9-6, a lead it would not give up for the rest of the set. Cardinal's offense again hummed, hitting .432 as a team, led by Lazard's six kills while Andersen contributed four. Cardinal claimed the set when Hannah Bailey misfired on a shot at 25-17.
Player of the Match
Jen Malcom. In her annual competition in front of the Cyclone faithful, the former ISU player and current assistant coach put up a dynamic performance while playing and coaching at middle blocker for the Gold squad. Malcom finished with three kills and three blocks.
