In Memory Of Celia

AMES, Iowa – The life of Celia Barquin Arozamena will be remembered and celebrated this week in multiple ways.

Barquin Aromzamena – the 2018 Big 12 Women's Golf Champion, an honored scholar and a renowned ambassador for Iowa State University – was killed Monday in a senseless act of violence.

A vigil in remembrance of Barquin Arozamena will be held tonight at 7 p.m. on the north side of the Campanile on the Iowa State University campus. If rainy weather persists, the vigil will be moved to Great Hall in the Memorial Union.

The gathering is open to the entire Iowa State University community. A few individuals have been selected to make remarks. There will also be opportunities for individuals to write messages that will passed onto Celia's family in Spain.

Barquin Aromzamena, the 2018 Cyclone Female Athlete of the Year, was scheduled to be recognized on the field Saturday for that honor when the Cyclone football team hosts Akron.

Iowa State Athletics will now honor her memory in a pre-game ceremony around 10:50 a.m. Some of the recognitions include…

the Cyclone football team wearing a "CBA" helmet sticker. Akron will do the same.
the Iowa State University Cyclone Football Varsity Marching Band will form the letters "CBA" as it prepares to play the national anthem.
a video tribute and moment of silence for Barquin Arozamena will occur right before the national anthem.
both football teams will be on the field in the north end zone for the video tribute and national anthem.

"We are asking Cyclone fans to enter the stadium earlier than normal and embrace Celia's teammates, coaches and friends," Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard said. "We are hopeful these recognitions pay tribute to one of our most accomplished student-athletes and serve as a springboard for our community to start healing."

Tributes across the world and nation have occurred all week and the Big 12 schools hosting games this weekend are planning to honor Barquin Arozamena as well.

The family has established an official memorial fund named the "Remembering Celia Memorial Fund." The funds collected will be directed to Celia's family to be used to honor her memory. Checks should be made payable to the Remembering Celia Memorial Fund and directed to First National Bank, 405 Fifth Street, Ames, Iowa 50010.
