MINNEAPOLIS, Minn- The Iowa State tennis team opened the 2018-19 season Thursday at the Gopher Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota. The Cyclones had four doubles pairs competing on day one.
Ekaterina Grib and Margarita Timakova began the season strongly, defeating River Hart and Tiffany Huber of Minnesota, 6-4. Grib and Timakova downed Camila Vargas Gomez and Kalyssa Hall of Minnesota 6-4 to win their bracket.
The duos of Karen Alvarez/Annabella Bonadonna and Savannah Williams/Caroline Gibbens both won their first matches, but did not play against each other in the finals of their bracket.
Overall, the Cyclones went 4-2 in day one doubles action.
Iowa State returns to action Friday at 9 a.m. at the Baseline Tennis Center. The Gopher Invitational will run through Sunday.
