LAWRENCE, Kansas – Iowa State (2-9-2, 0-2-1 Big 12) fell 1-0 to Kansas (8-2-2, 2-1-0 Big 12) on Saturday evening at Rock Chalk Park. The Cyclones battled KU to a scoreless first half behind an excellent outing from goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg, but were undone by a goal from Ceri Holland in the 82nd minute.
Turning Point of the Game
With just under nine minutes remaining in regulation, Kansas possessed the ball deep in its attacking third. KU's Grace Hagan played a ball for Holland streaking in at the top of the 18. Hagan's pass found Holland in stride, and the Jayhawk sophomore slotted her shot into the lower right corner of the goal for what would prove to be the game-winner.
The Cyclones looked to respond with aggressive play in the closing moments, including a particularly dangerous shot from Kara Privitera that was just inches away from equalizing. It would prove fruitless, however, as Kansas held on for a 1-0 victory.
Coach Speak
"I felt like it was a total team effort," head coach Tony Minatta said. "We had good opportunities going forward. We have to stay on the path that we're on. We're getting good opportunities, we're training hard and we just need to do a better job as coaches to prepare them. You can't give an opportunity like that to a team like Kansas, because they'll make the most of it and tonight they did. All in all, you're talking about a top-25 team that we just went toe-to-toe with."
On Deck
Iowa State will be back at the Cyclone Sports Complex for its Big 12 home opener on Friday. The Cyclones will take on Texas at 7 p.m. in a match set to be televised by Cyclones.tv.
