OMAHA, Nebraska – Despite claiming the first set, Iowa State was unable to get more against No. 14 Creighton, as the Bluejays won 3-1 (22-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-16) Friday night at D.J. Sokol Arena. The loss drops ISU to 5-3 on the season, while CU improves to 5-3.
Jess Schaben had her second double-double of the season with 16 kills and 17 digs. Grace Lazard was also in double figures in the attack with 11 kills. Hali Hillegas led the back row with 25 digs, her fourth time over 20 digs this season. Brooke Andersen also contributed 11 digs from the back.
First Set: Iowa State 25 Creighton 22
The Cyclones broke open a close set with a 4-0 run, combining offense and defense to move ahead 13-9. ISU was ahead at 15-10, but the home Bluejays began to rally, getting within two at 15-13, but the Cyclone attack pushed the lead back to five at 18-13. ISU was ahead 21-16, but CU had one more comeback in them, cutting the Cyclone edge down to one at 22-21. However, the visitors were able to hang on, as Iowa State moved ahead 1-0 when Avery Rhodes put down her fourth kill of the set at 25-22 ISU.
Second Set: Creighton 26 Iowa State 24
The Iowa State block had five in the first set, and used it again to good effect in the second, getting three early on, the third a Jess Schaben solo to move ahead 11-9. The Cyclones continued to press the advantage, as the lead moved up to seven points at 18-11 on back-to-back Grace Lazard kills. Again, the Jays were able to mount a comeback, tying the set back up at 22-22. ISU got to set point at 24-23 via an Eleanor Holthaus and Rhodes block, but CU held off and got a set point at 25-24. The Jays were able to put it away, as the Cyclones were unable to control a dig on a CU attack to give the home side the second 26-24.
Third Set: Creighton 25 Iowa State 22
Creighton stormed out of the set break to move ahead 4-0. It took awhile, but ISU was able to string together some points, eventually cutting the Jays' lead down to two at 16-14 on a Piper Mauck kill. Iowa State then narrowed it to a point when Jaali Winters hit it into the net at 20-19. However, ISU was unable to take the final steps as CU held ISU to .167 hitting for the set and move ahead 2-1 when Kari Zumach's kill was too much for the ISU block at 25-22.
Fourth Set: Creighton 25 Iowa State 16
The Cyclones' 9-6 lead was expunged via a 13-2 CU run to put the Bluejays ahead 19-11. The Iowa State offense struggled to find a rhythm, as the visitors were held to a .027 hitting percentage in the third frame. The Jays wrapped up the match when Lazard's shot sailed wide at 25-16.
