IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State fell to Iowa, 13-3, in a defensive battle Saturday at Kinnick Stadium. The Cyclones fell to 0-1 this season, while Iowa improves to 2-0.
Keys of the Game…
The Cyclones marched down the field on its first possession of the game but were stalled in the red zone and forced into a 23-yard field goal by Connor Assalley. After that 13-play, 66-yard possession it was tough sledding for the Cyclone offensive attack as it went on to total just 188 yards of total offense.
Iowa State's defense held the Hawkeyes to 271 yards of offense, keeping the Cyclones in the game as they trailed just 6-3 at the end of the third quarter. Iowa's Mekhi Sargent scored from two yards out on the first possession of the fourth quarter, giving the Hawks a 13-3 lead that it would hold onto for the win.
The Cyclones were able to gain just 19 yards on the ground because of four Hawkeye sacks. David Montgomery finished with 44 yards.
Players of Note….
Linebacker Mike Rose finished with 11 tackles to lead the Cyclones while becoming the first true freshman to start for the Cyclones defensively since 2006. Rose also had a tackle for a loss and a pass breakup.
Kyle Kempt completed 15-of-21 passes for 126 yards before leaving the game in fourth quarter.

*Six different receivers caught passes in the first half from Kempt…nine receivers finished the game with a catch for the Cyclones.
*Linebacker Mike Rose made the first defensive start by a true freshman since 2006 (Rashawn Parker and Nate Frere).
*Hakeem Butler caught a pass for the 16th-consecutive game, the longest active streak by a Cyclone.

Iowa State returns to MidAmerican Energy Field at Jack Trice Stadium next Saturday to host No. 6 Oklahoma. Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. with television to be announced.
