NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The No. 16 Iowa State women's cross country team finished 17th at the Joe Piane Invitational on Friday afternoon. The Cyclones were led by individual Big 12 and NCAA Midwest Regional champion, Cailie Logue, who finished eighth individually.
The team race was tightly contested, but No. 2 New Mexico ultimately edged No. 1 Colorado, posting a score of 110 to Colorado's 116.
The Joe Piane Invitational featured one of the most competitive fields the nation has seen this season. 11 of the teams ranked in the USTFCCCA top-30 nationally were in attendance, including five of the top-9 teams.
In her 2019 cross country debut, Logue picked up right where she left off last season. At the 4k mark, the Erie, Kan., native was in the lead pack and sat in 11th individually. Down the final stretch, Logue kicked into the top-10 with an eighth-place finish behind a 5k time of 16:27.67.
Abby Caldwell, who was named USTFCCCA National Female Athlete of the Week and Big 12 Women's Runner of the Week after the Hawkeye Invitational, posted a top-50 finish, taking 49th individually in a time of 17:04.45.
Freshmen Madelynn Hill and Dana Feyen finished 101st and 152nd, respectively. Hill ran the 5k course at Burke Golf Course in 17:33.42, while Feyen crossed the finish line in 18:03.95.
Gwynne Wright and Janette Schraft rounded out the Cyclone lineup at the Joe Piane Invitational. Wright finished 167th individually (18:03.95), followed closely by Schraft, who finished 172nd individually (18:23.01).
The Iowa State women will have a couple of weeks off before returning to the course at the prestigious Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational on Oct. 18.
