AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State women's basketball team (6-2, 0-0 Big 12) pieced together a late four-quarter comeback, but ultimately fell to Iowa (7-2, 0-0 Big Ten), 75-69. The Cyclones received double-double performances from sophomore Ashley Joens (26 points, 12 rebounds) and senior Ines Nezerwa (18 points, 10 rebounds).
How It Happened
Through one quarter of action, Iowa State held a 14-11 lead over Iowa. The Cyclones held the Hawks to 5-19 shooting in the first quarter, including 1-8 from deep. ISU had a defensive stand in the first quarter where Iowa did not score over a five-minute period.
Iowa opened the second quarter on an 8-0 run and climbed out to a 19-14 lead. The Hawks' offense was efficient in the second quarter, scoring on 9-12 attempts from the field (3-5 from three-point range), and extended its lead to as many as nine in the second quarter. Joens hit a layup to close out the first half and cut the Hawkeye-lead to 36-29 at the intermission.
The Iowa State offense came out firing in the second half, slashing the Iowa lead to 36-33 on a pair of Nezerwa buckets. Iowa answered back, and pushed its lead back up to nine at the under-five timeout in the third quarter, 45-36. Despite going just 1-10 from deep in the third quarter, Iowa State tied the game at 48-48 with stifling defense, holding Iowa to 1-8 shooting to close out the third quarter.
Iowa State headed to the fourth quarter on a 7-0 run.
Iowa went on its own 7-0 run to begin the final quarter, pushing its lead to 55-48, forcing an Iowa State timeout. Out of the timeout, Maggie Espenmiller-McGraw hit a three to cut the lead to 55-51. Iowa got its fourth-quarter lead up to as many as 11, but the Cyclones didn't go quietly. Iowa State chipped away, and with just under 1:30 to go, trailed 66-62.
Iowa outlasted Iowa State's late run and went on to win the game, 75-69.
Players Of Note
Ashley Joens recorded her fourth career double-double and third of the season. She dropped 26 points on 7-19 shooting. 12 of her 26 points came from the charity stripe. She pulled down 12 boards, eight of which were on the offensive glass, and added two steals and a block to her stat line.
Ines Nezerwa tallied her first career double-double. She scored 18 points for the game on 8-16 shooting. She was also busy on the boards, pulling in 10 rebounds in the contest, including five on the offensive glass.

Iowa State will be home again on Sunday afternoon. Wright State comes to town to take on the Cyclones at 1 p.m. That game will be broadcast and streamed through Cyclones.tv.
