BOSTON – Edwin Kurgat ran the fastest indoor 5,000 meters in Iowa State history and in the past seven years in NCAA Division I Track and Field to kick off the indoor track and field season at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener. Just two weeks after claiming the NCAA Division I Cross Country title, Kurgat lit up the BU Track & Tennis Center with his 13:24.04, a mark that made quite a bit of history.
Kurgat took down his own school record in the indoor 5,000 meters of 13:34.54, set at last season's Iowa State Classic. Kurgat's effort is also the Big 12 record, knocking off Kennedy Kithuka's 13:25.38 ran at the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships. He has also knocked Kithuka off the list of top-10 performers in NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field history at 5,000 meters, checking in at No. 10. Kurgat's run is the first indoors sub-13:25 in NCAA Division I since the 2012 Millrose Games, when four of the top-five times in NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field history was run.
Festus Lagat had a busy day, bringing two wins back to Ames. Lagat started the day in the mile, with teammates Daniel Nixon and Roshon Roomes doing the pacing for him. They were able to help put Lagat in the front and help him get the win in 4:04.06. A few hours later, all three were back in the 1,000 meters. Roomes paced and stepped off again for Nixon and Lagat. Nixon took the lead, but it was Lagat crossing first after a final 200 of 27.79 as he came home again in first in 2:23.81, with Nixon right behind in 2:25.08. Lagat's time was a personal best and moves him into No. 5 in ISU history for the event.
Cailie Logue was part of an elite field in the women's 5,000-meter run, a group which featured seven of the top-10 finishes from the NCAA Cross Country Championships two weeks ago. ISU's All-American held her own and ended up in 13th in an indoor personal best 15:50.15. The effort by Logue moved her up to No. 3 in ISU history at 5K indoors, with only Iowa State legends Betsy Saina and Lisa Koll ahead of her on the list.
