TULSA, Okla. – Iowa State (23-12) fell to Ohio State (20-14), 62-59, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday night at the BOK Center, as the Cyclones' 2019 postseason run came to an end.
Senior Marial Shayok poured in a game-high 23 points, but the Cyclones struggled on offense, shooting just 43.4 percent from the field, including 29.6 percent in the first half.
How It Happened
The first half was a tale of momentum swings, as Ohio State came out of the game fast, opening up an 11-2 lead while Iowa State made just one of its first seven field goal attempts. However, Shayok helped flip the script by leading the charge on a 15-2 Cyclone run over the next four minutes. The All-Big 12 guard scored eight of ISU's 15 during the spurt, including a pair of triples. Tyrese Haliburton flushed home a dunk on the break to put the Cyclones head 17-13, prompting a Buckeye timeout.
The momentum swung back in OSU's favor in short order, as the Buckeyes quickly regained their footing. The Cyclones went the next nine minutes without a made field goal, missing 11 straight shots at one point. Shayok stopped the bleeding with his third triple of the half, and the Cyclones were able to cut Ohio State's lead to 26-24 at the intermission.
Shayok led all scorers with 13 of ISU's 24 points at halftime, to go with two rebounds and two steals. The Cyclones were just 8-of-27 (29.6 percent) from the field in the first half, their lowest first-half field goal percentage of the season.
Ohio State went in to big man Kaleb Wesson early and often in the second half, slowly building its lead to as many as seven at 49-42 with 10:17 to play in the game. The Cyclones continued to battle, chipping away slowly, but never leading until a Shayok jumper with 3:40 remaining gave ISU its first lead of the half at 54-53.
However, the Buckeyes responded back back-to-back buckets, including a Keyshawn Woods triple to put OSU ahead 58-54 with just 2:42 to play. The Cyclones put together a last-gasp effort, with a Lindell Wigginton triple cutting the deficit to 60-59 with 23 seconds remaining. However, Nick Weiler-Babb's potential game-tying triple in the closing seconds rimmed out, and Iowa State fell, 62-59.
Players Of Note
Marial Shayok was phenomenal, leading the Cyclone offense with a game-high 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting. The senior pulled down five rebounds and ended the night with a team-high three steals on the defensive end.
Lindell Wigginton provided a spark off the bench, and some much-needed shooting from beyond the arc. The sophomore put up 14 points on eight field goal attempts, and knocked down 3-of-5 from 3-point range.
