AMES, Iowa – The No. 22 Iowa State gymnastics team has earned a spot in the Athens Regional, from Apr. 4-6 at Stegeman Coliseum. The Cyclones will begin competition on Friday, Apr. 5 in Session I on starting at 1 p.m. Central Time. The Cyclones have qualified as the No. 22 team in the country which is their highest rankings heading into Regionals since 2011.
The teams that will be joining No. 22 Iowa State at the Athens Regional are No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 8 and hosts Georgia, No. 9 Kentucky, No. 16 California, No. 19 Missouri, Maryland, NC State and New Hampshire. Joining the Cyclones in Session I are Georgia, Kentucky and Missouri.
Iowa State had a very successful season finishing with a 196.080 NQS, which is their highest NQS since the 2006 season. The team went over the 196 threshold three times including an impressive 196.700, which tied the highest score in head coach Jay Ronayne's tenure.
This year, the NCAA has changed their regional formatting system. There will only be four regionals consisting of nine teams instead of the traditional six regional spots with six teams. The first round will consist of two teams, second round will consist of eight teams separated into two sessions, and the regional final will consist of the top two teams from each session during the second round making a four-team final. The two top teams from each the final day will move onto Nationals.
Advancing from the four regional competitions will be a total of eight teams, four all-arounders and 16 event specialists. The top two teams, top all-arounders and top event specialists who aren't on the two advancing teams, will also receive a bid to the NCAA Championships.
