Cyclones Finish Top-20 in Final Rankings
04.22.2019 | Gymnastics
AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State gymnastics team capped off a very successful 2019 season after finishing 20th in the final RoadtoNationals rankings. This is Iowa State's highest ranking to end the year since 2009.
Iowa State also finished the regular season ranked 17th on vault, 22nd on bars, 33rd on beam, and 39th on floor. The Cyclones' 17th ranked finish on vault is its highest ranking on the apparatus since 2007 and its 22nd ranked finish on bars is its highest ranking in the event since 2011.
This year's team had many memorable moments including tying head coach Jay Ronayne's highest score (196.700), beating Iowa in Iowa City for the first time since 2010, and earning their highest final NQS since 2006.
Best Score
This year, Iowa State earned a 196.700 at Big 12-foe West Virginia on Feb. 2. This score was not only their season high, but it also matched the highest score in Jay Ronayne's tenure. Iowa State got to its season high 196.700 by scoring a 49.250 and above in three out of four events. The last time the team scored a 49.250 and above in three out of four events happened on March 17, 2006 against Iowa. This was also just the 11th time an ISU Gymnastics team was able to accomplish this feat.
Most Memorable Meet
Even though gymnastics has a lot to do with individual team scoring, it's still nice to get a victory, especially when it's against in-state rival Iowa. Iowa State beat UI in Iowa City for the first time since 2010 making it a Cyclone State. The final score of 196.275-196.250 ended in the closest possible scoring margin without the meet ending in a tie. The meet came down to the final rotation and the Cyclone prevailed thanks to Meaghan Sievers, Sydney Converse and Grace Woolfolk all having fantastic beam routines to surpass the Hawks. The 196.275 final score was the highest in Iowa City since 2004 and just the third time Iowa State scored above a 196 in Iowa City in program history.
