ATHENS, Georgia – The No. 22 Iowa State gymnastics team's season came to an end on Friday afternoon after scoring a 196.250 in the NCAA Gymnastics Championships Athens Regional. The Cyclones placed fourth in the competition falling to No. 8 Georgia (197.300), No. 9 Kentucky (196.850) and No. 19 Missouri (196.626).
Individual student-athletes advancing to the NCAA Gymnastics Championships will be determined at the conclusion of Saturday night's Regional Final.
Even though the team's season is over, the Cyclones had a lot to be proud of. Today's 196.250 was the third-highest all-time score at an NCAA Regional in program history. Additionally, this was the first time Iowa State scored above a 196.000 at the regional meet since 2014, and the fifth time in program history ISU went above 196 at the NCAA Regionals.
After today's meet, head coach Jay Ronayne tried to tie a bow on one of the more successful seasons in recent memory.
"We were on a quest the entire year to do the prettiest gymnastics, stick as many landings as we could, and hit 24 routines every time we're out there," Ronayne explained. "One way to look at is we did exactly what we set out to do. We really couldn't have done much better and I am more than proud with the way the team has matured over the season."
Uneven Bars
Iowa State opened the day greatly, scoring a 49.175 and sticking five of six landings on bars. The Cyclones have now gone 49.000 or higher in five-straight meets. The last time an ISU team did this was during the 2004 season. Natalia Ros Vaquer earned the highest score for ISU notching a 9.875. Meaghan Sievers had a great routine earning a 9.850. Ana Palacios and Laura Burns both added 9.825s while Maddy Langkamp scored a 9.800. Madeline Johnson rounded out the group tallying a 9.775.
Floor Exercise
Iowa State had a very successful floor rotation scoring a 49.175. Meaghan Sievers earned a 9.900 playing the closer role for ISU. Laura Burns, Cassie Diaz and Sophia Steinmeyer all had nice routines, each tallying a 9.825. Molly Russ also contributed to the group ending her afternoon with a 9.800.
Vault
Iowa State finished their afternoon scoring a 49.025 on vault. The Cyclones have scored a 49.000 or above six times this season, which is its highest since 2006. Sydney Converse has a beautiful vault tying a career high 9.850. Kelly Martin ended her Iowa State career earning a 9.825, while Arianna Orrego and Sophia Steinmeyer notched 9.800s. Meaghan Sievers and Kelsey Boychuk rounded out the rotation with a pair of 9.750s.
Balance Beam
The Cyclones scored a 48.875 on the balance beam this afternoon. Grace Woolfolk, who earned a 9.925 at Georgia earlier in the year, scored a 9.850 playing the closer role. Molly Russ was the next highest scorer tallying a 9.800. The next Cyclones to follow Russ were Meixi Semple and Sophia Steinmeyer who notched 9.750s. Sydney Converse also added a 9.700, while Meaghan Sievers posted a 9.550.
