LOMAS DE ZAMORA, Argentina – Another big crowd in Argentina, Tuesday night at Gimnasio del Parque de Lomas, saw the Argentina Women's National Team, the No. 11 international team in the world, defeat Iowa State 3-0 (25-16, 25-14, 25-18). The two sides also played a bonus fourth set, which was claimed by Las Panteras 25-8.
Iowa State was led by Josie Herbst's eight kills, while Candelaria Herrera led the block with three stuffs. Taylor Baranski and Izzy Enna each posted seven digs.
Set One: Argentina 25 Iowa State 16
Argentina came out strong, dominating both sides of the net to build a 5-0 lead. The Cyclones were able to get some help from a faulty Las Panteras attack, bringing the Argentine lead down to 15-13 with a 5-1 run. Argentina stepped up its defensive intensity again, responding with a 5-1 run of its own to get back ahead by six at 20-14. Las Panteras continued to pull away and wrapped up the first when ISU was called for a lift at 25-16.
Set Two: Argentina 25 Iowa State 14
The home team came out strong again, using good serving to help build up an early 8-1 advantage. Though there was never a path back into the set for the Cyclones, the young lineup featuring four freshmen impressed, with Michal Schuler getting down a couple of big kills in the process. Las Panteras made it 2-0 on a kill at 25-14.
Set Three: Argentina 25 Iowa State 18
The Cyclones got the first point of the set to get their first lead of the match, but the advantages were short-lived as the Argentines went on a 4-0 run to back ahead 6-3, and would not give it up the rest of the way. Again, the young Cyclone lineup of three freshmen, three juniors and senior Josie Herbst showed resilience, cutting the Las Panteras lead down to one on three occasions. Argentina wrapped up the set and the match with a kill at 25-18.
