WASHINGTON – Iowa State (5-3, 0-0 Big 12) fell in straight sets at American (5-4, 0-0 Patriot League) by scores of 23-25, 19-25, 22-25 Saturday.

American led Iowa State in kills, assists, blocks and digs while outhitting the Cyclones .290-.155.

Freshman setter Ella Florez had her first-career double-double with 21 assists and 12 digs, both career highs. Florez also sent over her first ace in the match and had two blocks.

Nayeli Gonzalez tied for the match lead with 10 kills, hitting them at .316.

SET ONE

AU went out to a 10-6 start and continued to lead at the media timeout (15-9) as the Eagles hit at .500. A Pam McCune kill cut into the Eagles' lead to make it 19-14, while Ella Florez served her first-career ace next. Nayeli Ti'a then sent over her fourth kill to make it a 3-0 run and cause an American timeout. A run of four, including two Nayeli Gonzalez kills, came shortly after to knot it at 20s. The score remained close from there, but AU would take the set 25-23.

SET TWO

Iowa State would call an early timeout at 8-3 after three Cyclone attack errors, and American would again reach 10 points first. ISU fought through a long rally to come out on top to make it 12-7, and the run featuring three Ti'a kills extended to five-straight to make it 12-10, AU. American called for a timeout and came out of the stoppage strong building an eight-point lead as ISU hit in the negative on the set. The Eagles kept with the advantage, taking a 2-0 match lead with a set score of 25-19.

SET THREE
ISU regrouped taking a lead of 8-5 after taking four-straight points, and hit 10 first with AU at 8. The Cyclones kept a tight lead on AU at the media timeout, but the Eagles flipped it after the break at 16-15. American kept the lead from there to win the match with a set score of 25-22.

Iowa State remains on the road next week, closing non-conference Sept. 18-20 at the Lucky Aces Volleyball Invite in Las Vegas. ISU will meet UCLA, Hawaii and Texas A&M Corpus Christi.
