IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State (1-2) fell 2-1 to Iowa (3-0) on Thursday night at the UI Soccer Complex. The Cyclones put forth a valiant effort, highlighted by a beautiful equalizing goal in the 84th minute by freshman Abbey Van Wyngarden, but were undone when Iowa responded just moments later on a goal from Natalie Winters.
Iowa State pressed on offense throughout the second half, including an apparent set piece goal that was taken off the board on a foul called in the box, but were unable to find a late equalizer.
Key Moments
Following a first half in which the Hawkeye offense was the aggressor, Iowa State seemed to find its footing after the intermission. The Cyclones put tremendous pressure on the Iowa back line early in the second half, including an excellent shot by Courtney Powell that forced Hawkeye goalkeeper Claire Graves to make difficult one-handed save.
However, the match turned in the 69th minute when Iowa forward Jenny Cape received a pass in front of goal from teammate Gianna Gourley. Cape used the back of her heel to sneak the chance past Cyclone goalkeeper Dayja Schwichtenberg, putting the Hawkeyes ahead 1-0.
Momentum swung back in Iowa State's favor when freshman Eva Steckelberg found fellow Cyclone newcomer Van Wyngarden open outside the box in the 84th minute. The native of West Des Moines, Iowa, unleashed a rocket on goal and Graves was helpless to make the stop. It was the first goal of Van Wyngarden's career, but the 1-1 tie was short-lived, as Winters found pay-dirt moments later for what would prove to be the game-winning goal.
Cyclone Game Ball Goes to...
Abbey Van Wyngarden. The freshman out of Valley High School in West Des Moines delivered the highlight of the night with her left-footed launch from beyond the 18-yard box. It was an absolutely beautiful strike and was yet another sign of the young talent on head coach Tony Minatta's squad.
Coach Speak
"I thought the second half we really came out strong," Minatta said. "We really tested their keeper and came at them. We grew up a lot, at the end of the game I think we had six freshmen on the field and really looked like we were starting to come together. We need to get on the same page collectively and start off stronger. We're going to keep moving forward. There's a lot to build on from this game."
