AMES, Iowa – Iowa State's Mira Emma has been named the Big 12 Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. It is the first Big 12 weekly honor of Emma's career, and the first for a Cyclone since Klasey Medelberg was named the conference's Offensive Player of the Week on Oct. 25, 2016.
Emma earned the honor after scoring a game-winning golden goal in Iowa State's 2-1 overtime victory over SIUE. Emma connected on a header in the 92nd minute off an assist from fellow freshman Claudia Najera to send the Cyclones past the Cougars. It was Emma's second game-winning goal in the last three matches, after helping to lead ISU past Omaha, 1-0, on Sep. 8.
The native of Wheaton, Ill., is Iowa State's first Big 12 Freshman of the Week since Hannah Cade earned the honor on Oct. 18, 2016.
Emma, who led the Cyclones with six shots on the weekend, is now Iowa State's points leader with five on the season. The Cyclones are back in action this weekend when they hit to road to take on No. 14 Memphis in Memphis, Tenn., on Friday at 7 p.m.
