IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State (8-3) extended its winning streak to six-matches and handed Coastal Carolina its first loss of 2019 with a 3-2 (25-14, 22-25, 25-17, 28-30, 15-12) win Friday afternoon at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. ISU is now 2-0 in the Cy-Hawk Series Tournament, and can take the title with a win over Iowa on Saturday night.
Friday's win was also the first Cyclone win in a five-setter in almost two years, with ISU having lost its last five matches to go the distance dating back to 2017.
Leading Iowa State in victory was Eleanor Holthaus, who got a career-high 21 kills to go with nine digs and five blocks. Annie Hatch got her career-high 18 kills at .500 hitting. Candelaria Herrera posted 12 kills at .526 hitting, while Josie Herbst had 11 kills. Piper Mauck had a double-double of 54 assists and 11 digs.
Set One: Iowa State 25 Coastal Carolina 14
Iowa State got its middles involved right away, with Candelaria Herrera finding the court for a couple of kills, two aces and a block to help push the Cyclones ahead 14-7. During the 9-0 run served up by Herrera that put Iowa State ahead for good, Avery Rhodes got involved with three kills. ISU dominated in all areas, hitting .389 as a team, restricting the Chanticleers to .115 hitting and firing two aces. Iowa State moved ahead 1-0 when Annie Hatch killed at 25-14.
Set Two: Coastal Carolina 25 Iowa State 22
who was able to push to an advantage, getting ahead by four at 13-9. The Cyclone attack was able to bring the score back within two on a couple of occasions, but it was Kate Shannon who finally got it down to one with an ace at 15-14 Coastal. However, the Chanticleers were able to spark its offense and work its way to a 5-0 run that put them up for good at 22-16. ISU made a late push with a strong serving run by Josie Herbst helping guide the Cyclones back within two, but it was too late. Coastal Carolina tied the match when Michal Schuler served into the net at 25-22, CCU.
Set Three: Iowa State 25 Coastal Carolina 17
Another set started out tight, but this time it was Iowa State who was able to get the edge through a stronger attack. Tied 11-11, Iowa State fed the ball to Herrera to help fire a 3-0 run to get ahead 14-11. The Chants worked back to within one at 16-15, but Iowa State took advantage of the mistakes to go on a 7-0 run to help put the set away. The Cyclone defense stepped up to restrict CCU to .057 hitting for the set, an effort which included three blocks. Iowa State got back ahead in the match when Holthaus notched her 13th kill of the match at 25-17.
Set Four: Coastal Carolina 30 Iowa State 28
The Coastal Carolina attack came out on fire to begin the set, getting 10 kills with no errors on 14 swings to move ahead 14-9. Iowa State worked hard and got ahead at 20-19 on a CCU blocking error, but the Chanticleers moved back ahead by two at 22-20. Hatch fired back-to-back kills to tie it again at 23-23, and Jaiden Centeno's over pass was not handled to get ISU a match point at 24-23. Coastal survived three match points, was unable to convert two set points of their own and finally forced a fifth set when they put away an overpass at 30-28.
Set Five: Iowa State 15 Coastal Carolina 12
Iowa State got the early break to move ahead 4-2, but Coastal was able to erase it and put the set back on serve at 4-4. CCU gave the break back to ISU at 6-4 on a setting error, which ISU was able to ride to the change of sides at 8-5. Rhodes and Holthaus combined for consecutive blocks to make it 9-5. Down 10-5, the Chanticleers got back within three at 10-7 but they would never get any closer as Iowa State pulled away with the final frame. Holthaus killed off the block to bring up match point at 14-8, and finished off the win when Hatch and Herrera combined for another block at 15-12.
Player of the Match
Annie Hatch. The freshman had another outstanding performance on Friday afternoon, as she fired a career-high 18 kills at a career-best .500 hitting percentage. She also contributed four digs and two blocks, including combining with Herrera to seal the match in the fifth set.

Iowa State closes out the Cy-Hawk Series Tournament tomorrow night with the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series showdown with Iowa. First serve between the Cyclones and Hawkeyes from Carver-Hawkeye Arena will be at 7 p.m., with BTN+ streaming the match.
