Iowa State went 3-0 and won the Appalachian Invitational title last weekend. The Cyclones defeated Western Carolina and North Carolina State in four sets and swept hosts Appalachian State.
The Cyclone effort was led by tournament co-MVPs Josie Herbst and Eleanor Holthaus. Herbst led the Cyclone attack with 35 kills at .411Â hitting, while Holthaus had 38 kills at .292 hitting and added in 12 total blocks. The Cyclone middles were also prolific, with Candelaria Herrera getting 2.64 kills per set at .389 hitting, and Avery Rhodes recording 2.36 kills per set at .417 hitting and 14 blocks on defense.
Setter Piper Mauck joined Herbst and Holthaus on the All-Tournament Team, helping guide the Iowa State offense to .332 hitting on the weekend.
Iowa State and Lipscomb will be meeting for the first time on Thursday. The Cyclones have never played a current member of the Atlantic Sun, or had played a former member of the A-Sun while they were in the conference.
The Cyclones and Coastal Carolina will also be meeting for the first time. The Cyclones do have some familiarity with the Sun Belt, having just swept Appalachian State last weekend.
Iowa State and Iowa will meet for the 52nd time in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series, with the Cyclones leading the all-time series 28-23. ISU will be looking to bounce back after falling to the Hawkeyes in four sets last season in Ames. However, Iowa State won the last meeting between the two teams in Iowa City, taking down the Hawkeyes 3-1 in 2017 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
